How to Build a Unit of Work. Bulletin, 1946, No. 5
Strickland, Ruth G.
US Office of Education, Federal Security Agency
Units of work represent an effort on the part of the school to relate subject matter and the development of skills in the organization of children's learning about important interests, topics, or problems. The units are made by teachers with their children and are designed to fit the situation in which they are to be used. There is no single pattern for a unit of experience. It can be carried out in a variety of ways depending upon the teacher's interests and resources, the needs and interests of the children, and the course of study requirements. This bulletin has been prepared as a service bulletin to help teachers select, prepare, and carry through the units of work which fit the needs of the children in their groups. A number of suggestions are offered so that a unit of work may be modified to fit the needs of individuals and groups as to time, organization, level and difficulty of content, and types of activities. Contents address units of work for younger children, middle-grade children, and older boys and girls; identify adaptations and variations in units of work, and provide subject bibliographies for the teacher and for the children, as well as a brief list of references to help a teacher build units of work.
