Science and Language Links: Classroom Implications.
Scott, Johanna, Ed.
The roles that language plays in science learning, the ways that science can be used to develop children's language, and how increased knowledge of language goes hand in hand with the development of scientific ideas provide the key focus for this book. The introduction provides an overview by focusing on what we mean by learning science, what we mean by learning language, using language to learn science, and using science to learn language (5 references). Part 1, "Science and Talking," includes the chapters: (1) "Reflective Quesitons" (David Keystone) and (2) "Second Language Science" (Lyn Turner). Part 2, "Science and Writing," includes the chapters: (3) "Writing in Science" (Jenny Feely) and (4) "Ways of Writing Science" (Leslie Wing Jan). Part 3, "Science and Reading," includes the chapters: (5) "Ways of Reading Science" (Nea Stewart-Dare); (6) "Reading Secondary Science Textbooks" (Beverly Derewianka); and (7) "Learning Science from Books" (Jo Coffey). Each chapter contains references. (JRH)
