The Training Requirements of the Clothing Industry. A Survey of Selected Occupations.
Berry, Kathleen M.; Kuhl, Dean H.
This survey was conducted in order to determine the training requirements of the clothing industry in South Australia. The results and findings are intended to be used as a means for upgrading and revising the Clothing Production Certificate Course and for providing suitable training programs for other key occupations within the industry. Survey data were gathered via interviews with senior managers from fifty clothing industry firms, with a questionnaire used to structure them; and from the Australian Bureau of Statistics industry and occupation records. Computer analysis of these data resulted in a profile of occupations being developed for all major occupation groups in the clothing industry. The twenty findings from the survey data suggest that the training needs of the clothing production industry in South Australia are diverse because of such factors as firm size, type of merchandise, range of machinery, methods of production, and quality of product. Areas of specific training requirements are stated and four certificate courses are recommended. Five wider curriculum issues are discussed: task analysis of selected occupations; extent of the client market; upgrading of skills within the industry; relevance of the Garment Design and Construction Certificate; and development of learning objectives. Ten recommendations are made concerning skill analysis, course structure, resource allocation, certification, credit, and scheduling. (KC)
