This study looked at attitudes toward "school leavers," young people aged 15 to 19 who left school after August, 1975, to enter the workforce and who have never studied full time for an extended period at a postsecondary institution. Data were collected through interviews with employers in Western Australia. As well as uncovering a number of findings about employer expectations and hiring practices, the study found a number of areas in which employers indicated dissatisfaction with school leavers. Although most employers considered that school leavers adequately met their requirements, they felt that young people lacked the qualities of industriousness, application, responsibility, self-discipline, motivation, respect and courtesy towards others. The leavers' communication skills were also considered unsatisfactory. Employers also felt that young people need to be better informed about job choices, what jobs they preferred and were suited to, and what would be expected of them in employment. Finally, the employers surveyed felt that the schools have a responsibility to try to improve students' verbal skill, attitudes toward work, and knowledge of the world of work.
