The use of strategic planning in Australian higher education institutions is compared with that in manufacturing corporations, including the similarities and differences in approaches taken. A comparison of planning strategies in manufacturing companies and academic institutions suggests that while some differences may be due to organizational type, most are attributable to the stage of evolution of strategic planning reached in academic institutions and to attitudes toward its use.
