Henderson State University Youth Opportunities Unlimited Follow-up. Final Report.
Steinmiller, Georgine; Duncan, Lisa Bergeron
The follow-up component of the Youth Opportunities Unlimited (YOU) program tracked the 127 students who graduated from 1988, 1989, and 1990 Henderson State University YOU programs throughout July 1989-June 1991. Students were contacted on a monthly basis through phone calls, school counselor contacts, letters, and newsletters. Findings indicated grades remained very stable and students maintained a stable attendance rate. The Junior-Senior High School Personality Questionnaire (HSPQ) was used to determine self-esteem attitude changes. Students showed a great improvement in their self-esteem scores, which were in the extreme range during the pretest. Scores in the posttest showed students in the normal range. These scores remained in the normal range after two years. The student exit interviews showed a very positive attitude expressed by YOU students. These attitudes remained positive as verified by the spring counselor interviews. Of the 127 total Henderson graduates, 19 graduated, 5 received General Educational Development certificates, 1 died, and 86 were still in school. In comparison with the graduation or stay-in rate of 75 percent for Arkansas students, the statistics suggested an 85-88 percent stay-in rate. (The 11-page report is followed by these appendixes: monthly contact schedule and materials; attendance and grades collection form; profile of HSPQ results; exit and spring interviews; forms used in the retreat; and stay-in statistics.)
