Influence of Adult Personal Resilience and Turnover Intention
Bridget Julia Duzy
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to determine if, and to what extent, the multidimensions of adult personal resilience were related to the turnover intentions of K-12 Arizona charter school teachers. The theoretical foundations used included the Adult Personal Resilience Theory, Turnover Intent Model, and Role Theory. A convenience sample of 125 Arizona charter school K-12 teachers completed an online survey that included the 20-item Adult Personal Resilience (DEAR) 5-point Likert scale survey and 6-item Turnover Intent (TIS-6) 5-point Likert questionnaire and a demographic survey. The study was guided by four research questions that examined if, and to what extent, a correlation exists between the dimensions of adult personal resilience (determination, endurance, adaptability, and recuperability) and turnover intention. The result of Spearman's rank-order correlation showed a statistically significant, small negative correlation between endurance and turnover intention (r[subscript s](122) = -0.219, p < 0.05), adaptability and turnover intention (r[subscript s](122) = - 0.188, p < 0.05), and recuperability and turnover intention (r[subscript s](122) = -0.214, p < 0.05), and no statistically significant negative relationship between determination and turnover intention (r[subscript s](123) = -0.113, p > 0.05). Based on the study results, school leaders may want to consider how individuals face, cope through and reset mental wellness as more significantly correlated to reducing turnover intention versus possessing the willpower to succeed. This study's conclusions generated relevant implications and recommendations for future research and practice to provide solutions to the teacher attrition problem.
