The Bigger Picture: What about Year-Round Education?
George, Patricia
National Middle School Association (NJ3), Middle Ground v8 n4 p19 Apr 2005
One hotly-debated topic related to scheduling is year-round schooling. While still the exception rather than the rule, year-round schooling (also called extended learning) is growing in popularity. According to the National Association for Year-Round Education (NAYRE), 3,180 public schools were operating year-round in 2002-2003. California leads the pack in the number of students served by year-round schools (more than 1.4 million), followed by Kentucky, Hawaii, Arizona, and Nevada--each with close to 100,000. This article presents some of the advantages and disadvantages frequently cited by proponents and opponents of year-round scheduling. (Lists 3 resources.)
