The standards presented in this book, for reading, writing, and mathematics, are those that will be initially assessed by Arizona's Instrument To Measure Standards (AIMS). These standards and those for other content areas will be a road map for education in Arizona. A statewide test is being developed for each of these areas to measure student progress and school performance, and it is anticipated that a science test will be added. Each standard defines what students should know and be able to do at various levels of achievement: (1) readiness (kindergarten); (2) foundations (grades 1-3); (3) essentials (grades 4-8); (4) proficiency (grades 9-12); and distinction (Honors). Within each standard is one or more performance objectives that describe the results of learning. The standards are listed for each level, with performance objectives associated with each standard.
