New Frontiers Handbook: Successful Programs for Sex Equity in Vocational Education.
Alberts, Heather; And Others
This manual overviews New Frontiers, a sex equity support program, and describes some of its most successful educational equity programs. Descriptions of four programs follow this format: purpose, program overview, and process. The programs are Student and Community Role Model Interaction (workshops to bring students and teachers into contact with people in nontraditional careers); Business, Industry, and Education Working Together (teacher and counselor workshops at business sites); Reaching Rural Schools (sex equity technical assistance); and Summer Learning Adventure for Junior High Students (exploration program with educator and parent inservice sessions). Ten strategies are then described that represent successful sex equity programs developed with the assistance of New Frontiers during 1981-82. Each strategy follows this format: a brief description, purpose, target population, key people, procedure, and outcome. They include an afterschool inservice session, nontraditional speakers, school board visit to promote awareness, visits by college counselors to recruit students into nontraditional programs, parent open house, alumni as nontraditional role models, exchange between a business and home economics class, freshman nontraditional vocational education orientation program, a recruitment program for greater nontraditional enrollment in Trade and Industrial programs, and equity inservice sessions for administrators and counselors. (Project correspondence and materials are appended.) (YLB)
