Patterns of Drug Use: School Survey.
Segal, Bernard; And Others
This study surveyed students in grades 7-12 in eight Alaskan school districts. The study was designed to obtain information on the use or nonuse of a broad spectrum of chemical substances, ranging from legal, socially sanctioned drugs for those of legal age such as alcohol and tobacco, to illegal and unsanctioned drugs taken for nonmedical purposes such as marijuana, cocaine, hallucinogens, and stimulants. Major findings of the study included the following: (1) one-half of the students reported experiences with one or more illicit mood-altering drug; (2) Alaskan students reported more experiences with psychoactive drugs than did their counterparts in the "lower 48"; (3) the majority of drug use was experimental and not daily use; (4) slightly higher proportions of males than females used drugs; (5) as age and grade level increased, the proportion of students who had tried drugs increased correspondingly; (6) most students who did not try drugs or who had stopped taking drugs reported fear that drugs would cause psychological or physical harm; (7) more students who had tried drugs expressed a need for drug education than did those who had not tried drugs; and (8) problems related to drug use increased as grade level increased. (Eighty-three tables and 26 figures are included. Survey instruments and the report of the Anchorage School Survey are appended.) (ABL)
