A time-honored goal of physical education has been to improve children's fitness and health, particularly given increasing evidence that physical activity is associated with short- and long-term health benefits in youth. Given the need to find ways to help children achieve fitness goals, and that students tend to work harder and treat lessons more seriously in the Sport Education (SE) curriculum model, the purpose of this study was to investigate changes in students' aerobic fitness levels following a season of SE. The season under investigation was an obstacle course in which students participated in teams learning about health-related fitness concepts, developing their owning training programs, and competing in obstacle course challenges. Participants were 23 male and 25 female fifth-grade students from an elementary school in rural Alabama. In their review of SE, Wallhead and O'Sullivan (2005) suggested that changes in student fitness may be hard to achieve using this curriculum model. While remaining cognizant of this study's small scale in terms of its research design and the number and diversity of participants, the fact that students experiencing the SE unit ran significantly more laps on the Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run (PACER) than those in the control group provides some initial evidence to counter this claim.
