Police Chiefs' Perceptions of Criminal Justice Education Impact on Officer Leadership Skills
Nathaniel Rutledge Jr.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Tennessee State University
The purpose of this study was to explore police chiefs' perceptions regarding the impact of criminal justice degree education on developing leadership skills in law enforcement officers. Specifically, the research highlighted how completing a four-year program in criminal justice cultivates critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and expanded knowledge of the criminal justice system--qualities essential for effective police leadership. A survey, consisting of Likert scale and open-ended questions, was distributed to 300 members of the Alabama Association of Chiefs of Police (AACOP) to gather their perspectives on how degree-holding officers demonstrated stronger leadership in their work. Results indicated that police chiefs perceived degree-holding officers as correlating positively with leadership abilities, evidenced by higher performance ratings, reduced misconduct such as excessive use of force complaints, and more constructive community relationships. These findings provide timely insights for law enforcement agencies aiming to enhance leadership by encouraging education. Overall, police executives tentatively suggested links between criminal justice degree attainment and skills crucial for transformational leadership approaches prioritizing community cooperation, though they emphasized that degrees should not replace on-the-job experience. To maximize benefits while addressing relevance and feasibility concerns, the study recommended customized education and incentive programs tailored for working professionals. Continued exploration of this relationship, informed by diverse stakeholder perspectives, could yield deeper insights into fostering effective leadership within law enforcement.
