Committees on Content Analysis and Correlation Studies were appointed by the Alabama State Superintendent of Education to provide information regarding the similarities and differences between the Californa Achievement Tests (CAT), Levels 13-C and 16-C, and the Alabama Basic Competency Tests (BCT), grade 3 and 6. The major purpose of these investigations was to provide comparisons relative to a decision to revise the statewide Testing Program. The BCT Reading/Language subtests were found to cover a wider range of specific skills than the corresponding CAT subtests. For mathematics, the content match between the CAT and the BCT ranged from very similar for grade 3 to only a moderate match for grade 6. A canonical correlation analysis indicated that, at grade 3, the BCT can predict 81% of the CAT variance; at grade 6, 85% of the variance can be predicted. Because of the strong relationship between the BCT and the CAT in grade 3 and 6, the Alabama State Department of Education decided to administer only the BCT in grades 3, 6, and 9.
