The Regionalization of Africa: Delineating Africa's Subregions Using Airline Data
Good, Pieter R.; Derudder, Ben; Witlox, Frank J.
Journal of Geography, v110 n5 p179-190 2011
Current regionalizations of Africa have limitations in that they are attribute-based and regions are delineated according to national boundaries. Taking the world city network approach as starting point, it is possible to use relational data (i.e., information about the relationships between cities) rather than attribute data, and moreover, it becomes possible to ignore state boundaries by delineating the regions based on the location of the interaction structure between cities. This research uses airline data. A network analysis is performed on the number of passengers who fly between cities in Africa. A subregional map is created based on the results. (Contains 3 figures.)
