Legislative Priorities for the 111th Congress

Lawmakers this year on Capitol Hill will weigh critical issues of importance to the nation's community colleges. The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) and the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) will be hard at work to ensure the interests of two-year institutions are well represented. This article takes a brief look at the 2009 AACC-ACCT Joint Legislative Agenda. The legislative priorities for the 111th Congress include: (1) Appropriations; (2) Higher Education Act (HEA) Reauthorization Implementation; (3) Veterans; (4) Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) Reauthorization; (5) Using the Tax Code to Finance Higher Education; (6) Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act ; (7) Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Competitiveness; (8) Higher Education Act Title VI and Fulbright-Hays Programs; (9) International Students; (10) Workforce Investment Act Reauthorization; (11) Trade Adjustment Assistance; (12) Sustainability; (13) Allied Health and Nursing Legislation; (14) Homeland Security; (15) Rural Economic Development; (16) Welfare Reform; (17) Facilities; (18) Service Learning and Community Engagement; and (19) Older Students.
