Major Needs of Career and Technical Education in the Year 2000: Views from the Field.
Lewis, Morgan V.
The major needs of career and technical education (CTE) in the year 2000 were assessed. The regional needs-sensing networks of the National Dissemination Center and the National Research Center for Career and Technical Education were used to obtain input from members of the following stakeholder groups: state-level liaisons; representatives of professional and business/industry associations with an interest in CTE; faculty representatives of universities preparing CTE teachers; instructors of secondary and postsecondary CTE programs; and representatives of Native American nations and associations of racial/ethnic groups. Priorities related to the following areas of the CTE field were identified through 30 conference calls with 149 representatives of the 7 stakeholder groups: improving the image of CTE; exemplary practices; partnerships; teaching-learning; clearinghouses; instructors/administrators; professional development; technology and distance education; assessment; implications of the Workforce Investment Act of 1998; skill shortages and basic skills; and multiple problems of constituents. (The following items are appended: description of the methods used to analyze the regional reports; report on the University of Illinois' test of Webboard; list of topics of information requests received by the question and answer service; samplings of postings to the Careertech discussion of the role/image of CTE; and list of participants in need-sensing networks through 2000.)
