Targeted toward young people aged 12 through 18, this handbook contains ideas for educational activities, suggestions for special events, a brief overview of the constitutional development period in U.S. history, and an outline of the Constitution. Excerpts from a few of the secondary materials developed for the Bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution are used to suggest how several major generalizations about the Constitution can be conveyed to young people. These basic ideas are to teach: (1) the intrinsic values embedded in the Constitution; (2) the unique historical role it has played in providing both a philosophical ideal and a model for the states and other countries; (3) the language and structure of the document; (4) the role of each branch of government; (5) what rights and responsibilities to which an individual is entitled under the Constitution; (6) the impact of the Constitution on the development of the United States through the years; and (7) the importance of the Constitution in current times and its influence on people's lives today. A list of useful resources for teaching this subject is included as well as a directory of law-related education leaders and resources within various states. (JB)
