Asian Americans: A Case of Benighted Neglect. AAMHRC Occasional Paper No. 1.
Owan, Tom
The undercount of the Asian American population, the phenomenal rise of Asian immigrants, the projected doubling of the Asian American population by 1980, and the concentration of this population in urban areas are significant reasons for the reordering of program priorities so that Asian Americans are not excluded from Federally funded benefits and services. The stereotyping of Asian Americans as success models for other immigrants has lulled the American public into considering Asian American concerns secondary to the problems of other minority groups. Despite the fact that the Asian Americans attained lower median incomes in the major metropolitan areas, lowest average public assistance incomes and lower average social security incomes, they continue to be ignored in their efforts to raise themselves into the economic mainstream. Asian Americans also have serious health problems. For example, they suffer a disproportionate percentage of tuberculosis in San Francisco and the Chinese have especially high hospitalization rates for mental illness in the State of California. Furthermore, the Asian American elderly in major metropolitan areas are facing serious survival problems due to a history of racism, evacuation into concentration camps, and denial of citizenship and job opportunities. An effort should be made to provide needed bilingual and bicultural social services to Asian Americans and other minority groups. (Author/GC)
