Stretching to the Next Rung: NCLB Requirements Set the Bar for Many Paraprofessionals, while Several States and Districts Have Developed High-Quality Training that Surpasses the National Law
Pardini, Priscilla
Journal of Staff Development, v26 n3 p14-18 Sum 2005
Under the No Child Left Behind Act, paraprofessionals must be certified as highly qualified. To meet the standard, they need a high school diploma as well as a two-year associate's degree, or two years of college credit, or a passing score on a state or local assessment that demonstrates knowledge of and ability to assist in teaching reading, writing, and math. In this article, the author presents some ways on how state departments of education and local school districts meet the higher certification requirements for paraprofessionals under the law.
