What's Money Got to Do With It? The Appeal of the For-Profit Education Model
Schilling, JoAnna
Community College Journal of Research and Practice, v37 n3 p153-159 2013
For-profit colleges have been dismissed by community college administrators and faculty as imperfect institutions that focus too heavily on skills-based training, to the detriment of a well-rounded academic experience. Although there are many appropriate criticisms of an educational model that relies on federal funding to make a profit--while enticing the lowest income group of students to take on huge debt--there may also be practices and resource efficiencies that can be exported to the community college. This paper seeks to examine what aspects of the for-profit model might be positively applied to the community college learning experience.
