The "First Liberty" Summit Report (Williamsburg, Virginia, June 24-25, 1988).
Williamsburg Charter Foundation, Washington, DC.
The Williamsburg Charter Foundation is a group a leaders from business, academic, political, and religious communities concerned about the importance of the First Amendment's guarantee of religious liberty in public life and about the ability of people to live together in a spirit of civility despite deep religious differences. This document is a summary overview of the highlights and central features of the "First Liberty" Summit, the centerpiece event of the Williamsburg Charter project. This report includes the program, the public pledges, and a keynote address from the ceremony at which the Williamsburg Charter, a document celebrating and reaffirming religious liberty for citizens of all faiths or none, was signed by 15 signers representing 9 key fields in U.S. life as well as 6 prominent faith communities. These signers stood for many other persons who also signed or endorsed the document. Reprints of several newspaper articles describing the event, as well as letters of appreciation from a broad range of religious and other organizations, are appended. (DB)
