This amended guide to the Child-Labor Provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act contains general information useful to employers and coordinators of cooperative and work experience programs involving employment of youth under 18 years of age. Included in the document are provisions relating to: (1) age standards, (2) coverage of the Act, (3) exemptions from the Act, (4) hazardous occupations, (5) employment during school hours, (6) age certification, (7) violation penalties, and (8) other applicable laws. Exemptions to some of the non-agricultural hazardous occupations orders are provided for apprentices and student learners under specified conditions. The student learners must be enrolled in a cooperative vocational training program under a recognized state or local education authority or in a substantially similar program conducted by a private school; the student learner must be employed under a written agreement for which specifications are provided.
