Shaped Goals: Teaching Undergraduates the Effects of Social Stratification on the Formulation of Goals
Touzard, Giselle
Teaching Sociology, v37 n2 p205-211 Apr 2009
This article describes an in-class activity that helps undergraduate students to understand the effects of their socio-economic position on the formulation, pursuit, and achievement of goals. Social stratification and inequality have an initial impact on the formulation of goals. Through this exercise students will perceive the effects of having a restraint in the pursuit of their goals, thus experiencing the impact of their socio-economic position in society. Students will understand the effects of social stratification and inequality since this activity explores the application of these concepts through the simulation of roles. By observing and/or participating in the exercise students may further evaluate their own personal situation, a technique that is highly recommended to encourage student's reflexivity and one that is useful for instructors "to overcome student resistance to examining the structural nature of social stratification and social inequality."
