Expanding Career Awareness of Preschool and Elementary School Children. Final Progress Report.
Riley, Pamela J.; Marotz-Baden, Ramona
To facilitate career education by reducing sex-role stereotyping of occupations, a project developed multi-dimensional packages including toys and teaching modules for three grade levels: preschool (ages 3-4), second grade (ages 7-8), and fourth grade (ages 9-10). Public Action Coalition on Toys (PACT) produced the toys for the project. (Modules are available separately as CE 024 426.) These materials were evaluated through post-testing to ascertain their influence on career aspirations. Research design provided for comparison of impact of the modules when used by teachers and by research staff in comparison with control groups of non-users. Pre-school and second-grade children were interviewed; fourth graders completed a questionnaire and were interviewed. Analysis of the results suggested that the modules and toys were somewhat influential in personal career choices but had far more impact on perceptions of what occupations are acceptable for both sexes. Females, but not males, were influenced by role reversals, probably due to "male" job prestige and/or pay. (Appendixes include lists and descriptions of the toys and the evaluation instruments.)
