The Alma College Career Preparation Program. Final Report, October 1, 1977-December 31, 1978.
Alma Coll., MI.
A career preparation program (CPP) at Alma College, Alma, Michigan, intended to strengthen career planning services, add new programs supporting and augmenting liberal arts program strengths, more effectively integrate educational progress with plans to enter the world of work, and develop faculty career planning skills and liaison with business, research, industry, and public service. Activities included a pre-school advisors' workshop, advisor contact with professionals, Career Consultant Network, career exchange between students and professionals, practicum program, and career preparation workshops. Evaluation of two pilot groups and members of the classes of 1978, '79, '80, and '81 assessed (1) career development growth using the Assessment of Career Decision Making, (2) learning of career planning skills and information, (3) placement readiness, and (4) the relationship of participation in career education activities to skills identification and independent career planning activities. Findings indicated that CPP participation led to improved scores in decision making for students dissatisfied with their choice upon entering college. Participation was positively correlated with satisfaction with major and arranging a practicum. Participation in a practicum was positively correlated with participation in CPP workshops. Participants were rated as having better resumes and reportedly higher skills development in communication and work-related skills. (YLB)
