The major objective of a project conducted by the Bedford County Public Schools in Virginia was to refine and further implement the model Career Education K-12 curriculum. Curriculum committees in five areas (art, language arts, mathematics, physical education, and social studies) were selected and given released time to receive in-service help and to write career education infused curriculum guides. Additional mini-courses were prepared for pupil and counselor/teacher use. Several of these courses were adapted, along with other materials, into a Career Education Handbook which was distributed to all instructional personnel. Teachers and guidance personnel received in-service to help them implement their part of the career education model. Key teachers from each elementary school and from secondary departments were selected to receive in-service on various topics. These teachers in turn shared the material with their colleagues. Guidance personnel received help on placement and career counseling and how to operate a career resource center. All activities were designed to assist students with self awareness and career awareness. Activities for secondary students were designed to aid in career preparation and decisionmaking skills. The project staff and guidance personnel developed and implemented a Plan for Job Placement, consisting of two components, career counseling and job placement. All activities were shared with special education students and gifted and talented students. Many activities were devoted to making school personnel aware of sex role stereotyping. (Author/BM)
