A Salute to Our Constitution and the Bill of Rights: 200 Years of American Freedom. Using the Newspaper to Discover How the Constitution and Bill of Rights Work.
Yeaton, Connie S.; Braeckel, Karen Trusty
In recognition of the need for suitable materials for the teaching of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights to young children, this book suggests model lessons, methods, and activities teachers can use. The book is divided into two sections. Section 1 consists of model lessons demonstrating the use of the newspaper to study the Constitution and includes activities suitable for grades 4-6. Step-by-step procedures and sample questions are given to show how a specific part of the newspaper is used in a lesson. Section 2 offers sample lessons which take children on a journey, beginning with their present-day experience, back to the time when the Constitution was written. Numerous activities are suggested. A mixture of materials and techniques is used throughout the lesson plans. Included among the appendices are a summary of the Constitution, a diagram showing the three branches of the U.S. government, some additional student activities, some sample constitutional problems, a glossary, and a biliographical guide.
