This flyer and kit were developed by the Systems and Procedures Exchange Center (SPEC) of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) to examples job descriptions used by academic and research libraries and present examples from various libraries. Job descriptions serve a variety of purposes in personnel management. In addition, current and accurate job descriptions should provide important elements of compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. A spring 1993 survey on librarian job/position descriptions mailed to 119 members of ARL was answered by 73 respondents. Most considered their job descriptions very or mostly accurate. Job descriptions are used for a variety of purposes, including selection and as part of the performance rating system. Part 1 of this kit contains job/position descriptions for Brown University, the Center for Research Libraries, Massachusetts Institute for Technology, Pennsylvania State University, and the University of Rochester. In Part 2, job/position descriptions and annual reviews and evaluations from the University of California at Riverside and University of Texas at Austin are presented. Part 3 contains samples of job/position descriptions for Auburn University, University of British Columbia, University of Colorado, University of Georgia, Indiana University, Kent State University, McMaster University, and University of Michigan.
