Future Leaders Institute: Rising Leaders and the AACC Competencies
Wallin, Desna L.
New Directions for Community Colleges, n159 p19-28 Fall 2012
The overall mission of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) is "Building a Nation of Learners by Advancing America's Community Colleges." A significant component of this mission statement involves the development of leadership. The AACC believes that leadership can be learned and is committed to supporting and growing leaders. In order to design leadership development programs that are effective for adult learners, an appreciation of how adults learn is crucial to the process. This chapter reviews the AACC competencies and how they have been integrated into the Future Leaders Institute (FLI) and the Future Leaders Institute/Advanced (FLI/A). The following topics will be discussed: (1) understanding adult learning principles; (2) designing the initial institutes; (3) developing the leadership competencies; (4) interpreting and integrating the competencies; and (5) summary and reflection.
