New Directions for Community Colleges, n145 p59-66 Spr 2009
Mississippi Delta Community College (MDCC), one of the oldest community colleges in the country, is located in Sunflower County, Mississippi, which was home to both the infamous White Citizens Council and civil rights heroine Fannie Lou Hamer. It serves one of the poorest areas of the country; the unemployment rate in the district is higher than that of any other community college in Mississippi. Since 1995, MDCC has aggressively worked to increase access to college for as many residents of the Delta as possible. The college established satellite campuses, increased its online course offerings, and has energetically pursued the newly approved dual-enrollment program with area high schools. As a result of the attention to access, MDCC's minority population has grown rapidly. In this article, the author describes how the English faculty at MDCC used part of the school's mandatory reaccreditation process to investigate the increasing lack of readiness among incoming students and discovered a serious disconnect between the new challenges and the school's traditional English program.
