Widening the Pathway to a Degree: Community College Students Experiences with Credit for Prior Learning
Berek, Jessica; Kortegast, Carrie A.
Journal of The First-Year Experience & Students in Transition, v34 n2 p111-127 Fall 2022
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to understand how students at a large, suburban community college have utilized credit for prior learning (CPL). This case study included semi-structured interviews with 17 students regarding how they learned about CPL, experiences receiving their credits, and their perceptions of how CPL contributed to their educational goals. Participants identified saving time, being able to take more advanced coursework, and gaining confidence to do college-level work as benefits to using CPL. While cost savings was mentioned, it was not seen as the primary benefit for students. Recommendations to increase use of CPL include better information about the process, increased staff training about CPL, and inclusion of CPL information during orientation programs.
