Research with a Purpose: Decolonizing Methodologies at Turtle Mountain Community College
Johnson, Caitline A.; Parisien, Tyler J.
Tribal College Journal of American Indian Higher Education, v33 n4 Sum 2022
As a result of historical trauma, it is an important step for Indigenous communities to take control of the research taking place with Indigenous populations. This is imperative due to the historical dehumanization of Native American people. Decolonizing research happens when researchers work together to foster the idea that they are with Indigenous populations, rather than conducting research on Indigenous populations. As a result, research can benefit both the researcher and the community. As researchers, it is necessary to collaborate with Native communities to ensure that the research is culturally sensitive and can benefit both the community and the individual researcher. With this in mind, Caitline Johnson and Tyler Parisien conducted a series of interviews with four faculty members at the Turtle Mountain Community College (TMCC) who are currently engaged in research projects at that institution. Johnson and Parisien asked them to reflect on their current research projects, methodologies, decolonizing efforts, and how their studies working within Indigenous communities have addressed community needs. This article shares the results of those interviews.
