Religiosity, Gender, and Study Skills
Sta. Maria, Nelly L.; Chowdhury, Vashkar; Nizam, Naji
College Student Journal, v52 n3 p315-328 Fall 2018
Though research in religion and spirituality within the field of psychology has been increasing, research on the impact of religiosity on academic outcomes is rare. Much of the research conducted on religiosity and academic performance in college has been conducted in Southern or Midwestern regions of the United States. To our knowledge, religiosity and study skills in college students has not yet been explored within the Northeast region of the country. In addition, our study is the first to focus exclusively on community college students, a diverse and highly inclusive population with no academic religious affiliation. In this study, college students completed measures of intrinsic religiosity (the DUREL) and study skills (the ASSIST-Short Form). Females scored significantly higher than males on Strategic study skills. Intrinsic Religiosity was linked to higher Strategic study skills, even when controlling for gender.
