Identifying Professional Development Strategies That Comprehensively Support First-Year Expereince Adjunct Instructors
Toni L. Pickens
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, National American University
The first year of a student's college education commonly presents new and challenging demands, which requires concentrated institutional support. The diverse population of community college students in particular, typically face increased obstacles on the journey to degree completion. First-year Experience courses have been established as a fundamental component in supporting student success and attainment. The majority of these courses are taught by adjuncts, or part-time instructors. Adjuncts have reported limitations unique to their part-time status along with a need for comprehensive support in order to successfully prepare for, and teach their courses. Identifying professional development strategies to address this need is essential, as studies show positive connections between faculty development and student success.
