Adjunct Faculty: You Matter! Creating an Onboarding Program to Support Adjunct Faculty at a Community College
Jared P. Brown
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
Adjunct faculty hired to teach at a community college lack onboarding (Danaei, 2019). At the time of this study, Montgomery County Community College (Montco) did not offer an onboarding program to adjunct faculty. Previously collected data indicated that during the hiring process, adjunct faculty did not receive knowledge about college culture, involvement opportunities, or important information to be successful. The research study created an onboarding program, known as the Adjunct Faculty Onboarding Program (AFOP), to ensure that newly hired adjuncts received onboarding support from the start of their contractual obligation. In fall 2023, new adjuncts were asked to complete the online AFOP program that included seven modules about Montco. Twenty-eight new adjunct faculty received an email invitation to participate in the study. Of the twenty-eight potential participants, fourteen agreed to participate and twelve participants completed the AFOP and survey. I invited survey respondents to volunteer for semi-structured interviews. Three adjunct faculty participated. I conducted a mixed methods research study design to analyze the survey and interview results. I identified the benefits of providing an onboarding program, the most helpful onboarding modules, and recommendations for future program enhancements. A limitation of the study was the small number of participants. Overall, the onboarding program was beneficial, and participants offered minimal modifications. The study reinforced that adjunct faculty appreciate being seen, heard, included, and connected to the institution where they are employed. I recommend that the onboarding program be offered to all new adjunct faculty at Montgomery County Community College in the future.
