Cloud Computing Adoption by Community College End Users: A Case Study

Research indicates that the end-user adoption rate of cloud computing (CC) resources in educational settings is lower than that of other industries in the United States. The qualitative case study investigated the factors affecting the laggard end-user adoption rates of CC resources at a community college using Rogers's diffusion of innovation/innovation of diffusion (DOI/IDT) theoretical framework, as recommended by previous studies. Prior studies determined that the limited use of CC resources in educational settings was a mitigating factor in teaching and learning in the twenty-first-century educational environment, and this study examined adoption practices. This study was guided by the following research question: What factors influence the end-user adoption rate of CC resources in education? The study identified 18 participants, comprised of 10 faculty members and eight staff members. A hand analysis data identified correlations and variations of responses from semi-structured interviews. The NVivo 12 data coding software discovered richer insights into the data. Three final themes emerged from the data: (a) experience, understanding, and use of applications; (b) benefits of GAFE CC applications at work and in academia; and (c) recommendations for implementing GAFE CC applications through training. Findings from the study revealed that the faculty's role of primarily spending the workday in a classroom was a contributing factor to the laggard adoption rate of CC resources along with the need for process-focused training, not previously identified as a mitigating factor of end user adoption. The end-user adoption rate for the late and laggard faculty and staff participants was primarily dependent upon colleagues' adoption. Findings from the study can increase the end-user adoption rate of future CC implementations at educational institutions.
