Knowledge Sharing, Organizational Culture, and Meeting Organizational Objectives in One North Central Texas Community College: A Single Case Study

This study was an exploration of the connections between knowledge-sharing, organizational culture, and meeting organizational objectives with the purpose of exploring potential barriers that impede a knowledge-sharing culture and hinder the accomplishment of the mission, vision, and goals. The problem addressed was the lack of a knowledge-sharing culture in one Texas community college, with employees spread among three campuses, with some working remotely. The study was guided by Stankosky's four-pillar model for knowledge management. Despite existing research on the impact of corporate culture on knowledge sharing, there is a shortage of such studies in higher education. Sixteen participants were interviewed in one-to-one in-person and remote interviews through Zoom videoconferencing. Four research questions were used to guide the study and interview questions. Research question 1 revealed successful and unsuccessful knowledge-sharing strategies and employees' preference for face-to-face meetings. Research question 2 showed how the lack of a knowledge-sharing culture affects the faculty and staff through barriers such as attitude, gossip, changes, busyness, limitations, silos, and other challenges. Research question 3 revealed how the lack of a knowledge-sharing culture hinders the mission, vision, and purpose. Eighty-seven percent had little to no exposure to the mission. The fourth research question aimed to discover the strategies that should be implemented. The main request by participants was a forum where knowledge could be easily accessed. A potential implication of the results is that division will continue or worsen if not addressed. NVivo computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software was used to manage, organize, and store the data. Findings in this study indicate that colleges should be combining short trainings and meetings as strategies to guide the organization toward a more cohesive knowledge-sharing culture.
