The present literature on leadership in higher education reveals that there is an association between the support of student affairs leaders and the success of the students who are single parents. However, there is a lack of research concerning the effectiveness of the support of student affairs leaders and how their support helps with the academic achievement of single parent students. This study was conducted to provide further knowledge of the experiences of student affairs leaders as they supported single parent students and discover how the student affairs leaders described their leadership role in supporting students who are single parents. The purpose of this study was to answer the research question: How do student affairs leaders describe their leadership role in supporting students who are single parents? A basic qualitative design was used as the methodology of the study. Student affairs leaders from community colleges who had experience working with single parent students comprised the target population. The sample drawn were nine student affairs leaders who worked in student affairs departments in community colleges from the southeastern region of the United States. These student affairs leaders had experience in providing support for the academic achievement of single parent students enrolled in a community college. The data provided were organized into initial codes, categorized, and developed into four themes: (a) the supporting role of student affairs leaders, (b) the emergence of the servant leadership style, (c) the impact of supporting single parent students, and (d) the development of relationships between student affairs leaders and single parent students. The findings indicated that support offered to single parent students from student affairs leaders is a key factor in the success of these students. Additionally, the findings support previous literature, which emphasizes that when the student affairs leaders support single parent students, the experiences of the students become more positive inside and outside of college as they face the challenges of the dual role as college students and single parents. These student affairs leaders focused on improving the success of single parent students. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that student affairs leaders in higher education implement a servant leadership style in their leadership efforts to support single parent students to help these students overcome the challenges they face and reach their goals.
