Onboarding of New Success Coaches: Development of a Training Program
Amber Moore
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
Many colleges have initiated Student Success Coaching programs to support students from enrollment to completion. The purpose of this study was to design and implement an online training program to ensure that new Success Coaches at one community college receive adequate training before beginning to work with students. A review of the literature examines previous research on Success Coaching as intervention strategies and training of Success Coaches. Because of unclear expectations, no onboarding and training, and inconsistent practices, the community college realized that a comprehensive training program would foster student success. NACADA's Core Competencies for Academic Advising (2017) provided the framework for the program's design. This study took place in a public, suburban community college in the Middle Atlantic region. Ten Success Coaches participated in focus groups. The study results demonstrated that Success Coaches viewed themselves as better prepared to coach students when provided with a training program.
