Perspectives of First-Year Community College Students on Their Experiences with College Preparation in Math and English: A Qualitative Case Study
Naomi Salais Hooks
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
The problem addressed in this study was the level of preparedness of first-year community college students enrolled in remedial math and English courses instead of entering college-level courses. Hence, many high school graduates are not satisfactorily prepared to endure the rigors of college coursework and have to take remedial courses. The purpose of this qualitative study utilizing the descriptive interpretative design was to explore the experiences of first-year community college students and their preparation for college-level courses. The conceptual framework for this study used David Conley's model illustrating specific points to achieve college and career readiness at the high school level, known as the four keys to college and career readiness model. This qualitative research study with a descriptive interpretive design investigated the high rate of first-year community college students taking math and English remedial courses instead of entering college-level courses. The research occurred at a local two-year accredited community college in the southeast region of the United States. For this research, a purposive sample of 20 participants was collected, and the interview procedure consisted of 18 open-ended, semi-structured questions, which were recorded. The data collection tools for this study were interviews and artifact analysis. Once the data was collected using interviews and artifacts, such as community college requirements, a thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. The results showed a lack of preparedness students encountered in their college courses during their first year in college. By conducting further research, researchers can gain some valuable information from this study. Furthermore, recommendations for practice for educators can include group projects, such as research papers and social connectivity and learning. Therefore, by instituting a college readiness program in high schools, graduating students are able to attend any institution without the need for remedial education.
