Strategies of For-Profit Education Leaders on Retaining Students in Community Colleges: A Qualitative Delphi Study
Lee, Omega
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Phoenix
Student retention has been an issue that has plagued college institutions for decades. Many researchers have conducted studies to investigate the challenges associated with students staying enrolled at their institutions. Although challenges in student retention exist, for-profit colleges have fared better in student retention than community colleges. This study was created to gain consensus from for-profit education leaders on their strategies for retaining students in college. The findings of this study will be necessary for community college leaders to consider strategies from an opponent in the sector who may provide a divergent insight into improving student retention strategies. The research questions focused on gaining consensus from the panel experts regarding retention strategies and challenges. The research questions were "What is the consensus among participants regarding strategies to retain students in college?" and "What is the consensus among participants regarding the challenges that impact student retention in college?" The questions were derived from the Delphi method, and the results were analyzed using the In Vivo method. The population was twelve education leaders from for-profit colleges in the Northern California region. The research results identify that (1) focusing on student engagement, (2) creating an environment inclusive of student support, (3) creating a campus culture of community, (4) building relationships amongst students, staff, and faculty, and (5) providing resources constructive to student retention efforts support retention strategies. Therefore, practitioners and leaders in the field might consider these strategic considerations to improve student retention.
