Personality Traits and Job Satisfaction of Technical College Faculty

This quantitative correlational study examined the relationship between personality traits and job satisfaction. Participants consisted of 126 full-time technical college faculty members in the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG). The Five-Factor Model (FFM) served as the theoretical framework. The Individual Contributor format of the Personal Style Inventory (PSI/IC) was used to measure personality traits and job satisfaction. FFM traits-openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, emotional stability, plus four workplace traits-assertiveness, customer service orientation, optimism, and work drive were correlated to the job satisfaction scale measures. A Pearson correlation was conducted to test the hypotheses for nine research questions representing each trait. Results indicated that significant correlations do not exist between traits--"Openness R"(123) = -0.002, p = 0.984; "Extraversion R"(123) = 0.144, p = 0.112; "Assertiveness R"(123) = 0.125, p = 0.0167; or "Work Drive R"(123) = 0.162, p = 0.073 and job satisfaction among technical college faculty. Significant, mild to moderate correlations exist between traits--"Conscientiousness R"(123) = 0.315, p < 0.001; "Optimism R"(123) = 0.353 p < 001; "Customer Service Orientation R"(123) = 0.240, p = 0.007; "Emotional Stability R"(123) = 0.325, p < 0.001, and job satisfaction among technical college faculty. A significant, mild positive correlation exists between "Agreeableness" and job satisfaction among technical college faculty R(123) = 0.284 p = 0.001. These findings may stimulate future research and contribute to revisions of existing processes for faculty screening, selection, and retention.
