Perceptions of Texas Community College Faculty and Concealed Carry in Classrooms
Calhoun, Tammy
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, National American University
Texas community colleges are facing new challenges every day from outside forces. One of the latest forces is the Texas state legislature. The state legislature has allowed the carrying of conceal weapons on community college campuses with the passing of Senate Bill 11 (Handgun Laws, 2018). Historically, community colleges have been safe places for instructors and students to learn and explore new ideas. At present, instructors and students may carry concealed weapons on campus, into faculty offices, and classroom. The possible presence of concealed weapons in the teaching environment may affect how some instructors might teach certain subjects. The researcher wanted to how the presence of concealed weapons might change how instructors taught class. A survey was sent to a sample of Texas community college instructors via the presidents and chancellors. The results of the anonymous survey were recorded and analyzed for any patterns or change in how community college instructors taught their classes or conducted offices hours. The researcher found Texas community college instructors did not significantly change how they taught class, held office hours, or interacted with others on campus.
