The NASP Exposure Project: Using Research in Practice to Advance Strategic Goals

The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) Exposure Project (NASP-EP) began as an initiative of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) Multicultural Affairs Committee (MAC), and specifically the African American Subcommittee, the HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) and High School Exposure Project. Aligned with two of NASP's strategic goals, the NASP-EP is a multiyear outreach that endeavors to remedy critical workforce shortages and advance social justice, specifically by increasing diversity throughout the profession. As the nation is becoming increasingly heterogeneous, school psychologists must reflect the background and experiences of the students, families, schools, and communities they serve. The persistent workforce shortages in school psychology and the lack of racial, ethnic, and linguistic diversity in the profession are both longstanding and multifaceted issues. Specifically related to workforce shortages, among other factors, there are not enough school psychologists entering the profession to replace those who retire or leave the field for a variety of reasons (Castillo, Curtis, & Tan, 2014). Additionally, the school psychology workforce is markedly less diverse than the PK-12 students and families it serves. Data collected through the most recent NASP membership survey showed that only 13% of school psychologists are members of racial/ethnic minoritized groups and 14% speak a language other than English (Walcott & Hyson, 2018). In comparison, almost half of the school-aged population is from racial/ethnic minoritized groups (Vespa, Armstrong, & Medina, 2018) and over 20% speak a language other than English (Ryan, 2013). This article describes how the NASP-EP is a practical method to both remedy workforce shortages and increase diversity throughout the profession.
