Children who struggle with weight management often endure a broad range of consequences, including stigmatization, well into adulthood. With an increase in the prevalence of overweight children, there are now more children at risk of being stigmatized. The purpose of this study was to examine stigmatization across the elementary and middle school years. Children were asked to rank 10 drawings of other children in the order in which they would select them to be their friend. The data showed that children still show bias against overweight children. School-based programs continue to be needed, and they may be more effective if there is greater emphasis on weight acceptance.
