Mental Health Action Plans (MHAPs): A Pilot Study Exploring Coordinated Mental Health Supports for Students with Intensive Socioemotional Needs

ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Indiana University
Students present with mental health needs and posttraumatic stress symptoms, yet they largely do not receive necessary services. Since schools are an ideal setting for students to receive mental health services, Mental Health Action Plans (MHAPs) were developed to define and detail the ways in which student mental health needs can be addressed at school. Similar to Individualized Education Plans, 504 plans, and Behavior Intervention Plans, MHAPs are individualized plans, grounded in person-centered care planning. The goal of this study was to identify how implementing a MHAP affects student mental health and academic performance, to examine the feasibility of implementing MHAPs with fidelity, and to garner stakeholder feedback on using MHAPs in a local junior high school. Study results indicate MHAPs could be a mechanism to meet student mental health needs in school, help students and caregivers feel supported at school, and ultimately shift the role of schools to focus on the whole child by providing proactive supports promoting wellness without waiting for more significant problems to develop.
