Tea Cakes and Sweet Potato Pie for All: Student Responses to African American Stories in Mathematics
Corp, Amy
Curriculum and Teaching Dialogue, v19 n1-2 p35-52 2017
This chapter describes how Black, Hispanic, and White students responded to the use of African American stories in their mathematics classes. After working problems related to the story, all students rated their feelings about the story and how the story helped them think about mathematics. Results from student data and observations in class strongly demonstrate how using stories that affirm nondominant populations can be successful in engaging all students in mathematics.
