The Effects of a School-Wide Positive Behavior Intervention Support Program on the Intrinsic Motivation of Third Grade Students
Amis, Sarah Anne
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Trevecca Nazarene University
This research project sought to determine the effects of a School-Wide Positive Behavior Intervention Support program (SWPBIS) on the intrinsic motivation of third grade students in regard to student achievement, student behavior, and teacher perception. Students of two intermediate schools served as the treatment group and control group, and were pre- and post-tested using the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory-Interest and Enjoyment Subscale (Ryan, 1982) and the Children's Academic Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (Gottfried, 1986). Results indicated that students participating in the SWPBIS program had decreased intrinsic motivation in several areas. Further research would be beneficial to determine interventions that could be used to foster intrinsic motivation in children.
