Teaching Sociology, v35 n4 p350-359 2007
This research note provides some basic information about the courses that are typically offered in community colleges, and whether these courses have prerequisites. As higher education becomes more accessible to the general public, community colleges have received more students. Furthermore, an increasing number of students transfer from these schools into four-year institutions to complete a major in sociology. Consequently, it is increasingly important to study the programs offered by those schools and to have basic information about the availability and structuring of sociology courses in two-year settings. This study focuses primarily on four research questions: (1) what is the range of department/unit structures in which sociology is taught in community college settings?; (2) what courses are typically listed in the catalog?; (3) is there any type of sequencing or prerequisite structure for the sociology courses offered in two-year institutional settings?; and (4) what is the breadth of sociology offerings available in two-year institutions? (Contains 3 tables and 1 footnote.)
